Motorsports existed in Nigeria more as a passion than as structure, admired from a distance but rarely cultivated as an industry. However, two organizations are on the verge of rewriting that story.
XtremeMechanics and RADA are both forging a new path — one through grassroots engineering and innovation, the other through governance and policy. Together, they want to create a model of how Nigeria’s motorsports sector can be structured.
XtremeMechanics is located in Ilorin, Kwara State Capital. Its workshop has a group of students gathered around a stripped-down chassis, sketching designs before bending steel into shape. For them, this is not just an academic exercise but a chance to create something tangible — a race-ready car assembled and built from the scratch.
The Academy has set out to engage young Nigerians in engineering and innovation while using motorsports as a platform to apply STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills. Students here learn to design, fabricate, and assemble race cars entirely from scratch and in the process, acquire technical expertise, creativity, and leadership skills along the way.
At the centre of activities is Engr. Bola Bolarin, CEO/Lead Project. Passionate and brimming with conviction, Bolarin carries a vision that extends far beyond steel and wheels.
“We are not just teaching students how to build cars,” he explains. “We are teaching them how to build futures. Our vision is to create a new generation of innovators who see motorsports as both a sport and a technological frontier. This initiative is the first of its kind in West Africa, and our products will be our lasting contribution to Nigeria’s place in the formula world.” He said
While XtremeMechanics is focused on innovation at the grassroots, Racing Automobile Development Association (RADA), wants to shape the higher-level structures needed to support such progress. Made up of motorsports enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, industrialists, and social leaders, RADA is dedicated to create policies and frameworks that can formalize and regulate the sport.
According to RADA Board of trustees Chairman, Engr. Lateef Orisumbare, the mission is clear:
“Our role is to give motorsports in Nigeria the structure it has always lacked. We want to create governance models, policies, and standards that will allow the sport to grow sustainably. Motorsports is not just about competition, it is about safety, investment, and recognition. Our vision is to make Nigeria a country where motorsports is not an afterthought but a structured and respected industry. By focusing on governance, RADA ensures that the technical innovations coming from XtremeMechanics do not remain an isolated experiments but become part of a wider and credible industry framework”, He Concluded.
XtremeMechanics provides the hardware — cars, skills, and manpower. RADA provides the software — rules, structures, and governance. One inspires through creativity and innovation; the other organizes through policy and vision.
The partnership between XtremeMechanics and RADA is still in its early days, but it carries the weight of possibility. If properly supported, it could become the template for motorsports in the country.
Ultimately, the shared vision is not simply about motorsports. It is about using the sport as a platform to empower youths, stimulate innovation, and create a structured sector that can stand alongside global standards.
