West African Basketball Classic will gets underway in a new championship format that is set to add value to basketball culture with Africa. This follows the unveiling of the regional ground-breaking tournament
In a significant announcement that marks the beginning of competitive basketball action across West Africa, during a press conference.
Spearheaded by an independent group from Nigeria, Benin Republic, Ghana and Togo, the group is committed to advance club basketball in the region under the FIBA Africa Zone 3 umbrella.
Speaking about the details of its inaugural edition, the WABC President, Olumide Oyedeji, said the selection of six teams to partake in the project, marking the formation of the WABC in Gidi Giants and Kwara Falcons from Nigeria, ASPAC and ELAN Coton from Benin Republic, Customs from Ghana and Swallows from Togo was primarily to see how the first edition would fare.
The opening phase will hold in Togo from February 24 to March 2 while the second phase will happen in Benin Republic in April while the highly purported Final Four is slated for June 8 to June 12 in Ghana, leading up to the grand finale set to unfold in Abuja.
The competition format will feature round-robin games during the group stages, intensifying the thrill and competition among the participating teams.
Notably, a championship trophy and medals await the top-performing team, first runner-up, and second runner-up as the winner will embark on a playing tour of China sponsored by PEAK.
