Tear gas was fired on Monday by Police in Democratic Republic of Congo to wade off protest which saw burning of tyres and flags near embassies and UN offices in Kinshasa.
A new format by protesters by targeting embassies, claims the West supports neighbouring Rwanda, allegedly of backing the Tutsi-led M23 rebel forces threatening the city of Goma.
Though Rwanda has denied the claims however, Congo, Western governments including the United States and Belgium, and a United Nations group says the rebel force are benefiting from Rwandan support.
Groups of protesters were at the US and French embassies, the offices of the United Nations mission in Congo known as MONUSCO, despite the beefing up security following the attack on UN staff and vehicles.
Objects were thrown in an attempt to destroy surveillance camera’s at United States embassy offices, as protesters shout “Leave our country”.
Congo’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Christophe Lutundula had a meeting with ambassadors and heads of diplomats in Kinshasa, where he said measures would be put in place to protect their interest.
Eastern Congo have been involved in long term conflict involving rival armed groups over land and resources, killing hundreds of thousands, displacing over 7 million.
