Egypt sworn in Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi for a third six-year term on Tuesday following his re-election in December.
At the administrative capital in cairo, El-Sissi took the oath of office before parliament, having won 89.6% of the vote in the December election, with turnout of 66.8% more than 67 million registered voters.
The president had overthrown democratically elected Islamist, Mohamed Morsi in 2013 before winning his first election the following year in an election dominated by the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza on Egypt’s eastern border, threatening a wider regional turmoil.
Elnessi was reelected in 2018 and a year later, constitutional amendments, added two years to el-Sissi’s second term, and allowed him to run for a third, six-year term.
Egypt, despite signing a deal with the IMF, struggles with economic crisis, resulting in the decline of its dollar revenues from Suez Canal in contrast to last year following attacks on ships by Yemen’s Houthis rebels in the Red Sea.
