Plans for a general amnesty for political demonstrators from 2021 to 2024, in a bid to reduce tensions ahead of upcoming elections is in the pipeline according to Senegalese president,Macky Sall.
He made the announcement during a national dialogue where he reiterated commitment to stage elections in July while giving assurances that he will leave office by April.
President Sall revealed plans to submit a bill to the National Assembly, calling for amnesty for political acts in relation to demonstrations during the specified period. A significant move towards reconciliation which he said, will bond and create an enabling environment for the electoral process.
Rejected candidate Alioune Sarr noted the nation’s rich political history while stressing on the importance of dialogues to make sure democratic change of power despite high tensions in the country.
His opinion shows willingness for inclusion and following democratic principles, which supported the ideas of previous consensual understanding that has reform the nations political landscape.
Seydou Diouf, a member of the National assembly, berated Macky Sall intentions to bring stakeholders together for discussion, saying there’s need for wide consultations for openness and fairness in the electoral process.
He mentioned the president no qctivity in the election further shows the necessity of good leadership in bringing peace in changing of power.
However, following the president goodwill, 16 presidential candidates failed to show up for the national convention, asking for clarity on the election date after a court order this month.
Failure to declare the election date, caused tensions and concerns about the electoral process’s integrity.
