The home of the Speaker of South Africa Parliament, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula was raided as part of a probe into accusations that she accepted bribes in her previous role as defense minister.
It happened at the Johannesburg home of the veteran lawmaker with the ruling African National Congress party.
However, she denied allegations of wrongdoing, saying she has nothing to hide as she condole herself in peaceful manner with the investigators.
Mapisa-Nqakula, 67, was thrown in the spot light this month following a newspaper publication which alleged her of receiving the sum of $120,000 in bribes, delivered in cash, from a defense contractor between 2016 and 2019.
The lawmaker was supposed to preside over a Parliamentary session where lawmakers put questions to President Cyril Ramaphosa but unfortunately, the deputy speaker oversaw the session.
Oppositions, notably, Democratic Alliance party bemoaned her to resign. She had also faces bribery allegations while serving as defense minister, but charges were drop after she became Speaker in 2021.
She becomes another ANC figure, accused of corruption during the leadership of former South African President Jacob Zuma between 2009 to 2018 before he step down following series of allegations.
ANC’s reputation has been hit by corruption scandals and the party now faces the challenge of losing its majority in May as oppositions seeks coalition for the first time.
