Benin Republic will aid Haiti with 2,000 troops in a bid to seek multinational peacekeeping force in assisting the nation’s police fight armed gangs.
US ambassador to United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said at a press briefing in Guyana that the development came on the back of the United States committing US$200 million in support, marking a significant international effort to restore peace and democracy in Haiti without direct military involvement.
In October, the U.N authorized the quest after Haiti`s unelected government made a request
to offer support to security forces, based on voluntary contributions, which came mostly from developing countries in Africa and the Caribbean.
Kenya was the first nation in Africa to attend to the request, pledging to front the mission with 1,000 police officers, however, a local court, stopped the move, saying its unconstitutional but President William Ruto promised to continue with plans.
Other Caribbean nations has signified support, calling on Francophone countries to join the effort.
