Unknown forces extinguished the life of a government commissioner and 15 others in South Sudan’s Pibor region in the wake of violence in the country.
Information minister of Greater Pibor Administrative Area, Abraham Kelang, narrated that the attack happened on Tuesday when the commissioner of Boma County in Pibor was returning from a village visit where they were ambushed.
Early signs indicated that the culprits are suspected youths from the Anyuak community within the region who killed the Boma’s deputy army commander, government officials, and the commissioner’s bodyguards.
The region, dominated by the Murle ethnic group, has witnessed frequent violence involving the Murle, Anyuak, Nuer, or Dinka communities from neighboring Jonglei State.
The latest crisis, berates the challenges facing South Sudan in achieving a political stability.
It has faced major crisis since gaining independence from Sudan – primarily ethnic differences between Dinkas and Nuers, resulted in casualties from 2013 to 2018.
A peace deal that was brokered in 2018 did little to stop fightings among various groups, leading to casualties and displacement as the Greater Pibor Administrative Area remains affected by such violence.
