Females in South Sudan have been learning combat skills at a training camp following several months of clashes between the Sudanese forces, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, a powerful paramilitary group commanded by Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.
Last year April, the crisis in the capital, Khartoum spread to other areas of the country following months of coalition between the forces.
At the training camp in Port Sudan, one of many set up across the country after the Sudanese army called on civilian to take up arms, as military personnel set up a camp base to teach women fighting skills and how to use rifles.
According to reports, close to 12,000 people have died in the conflict while over 9 million people have been displaced in Sudan, with 1.5 million refugees fleeing into neighbouring countries as the crisis deepens.
United nation food agency has warned that it has received reports of hunger as Michael Dunford, Regional Director for Eastern Africa at the World Food Programme, mentioned that the war had caused Sudan to be the “biggest humanitarian crisis we have today” and he urged the international community for greater support.
