About thousands of South Africans came out in numbers over the weekend in solidarity to the country’s top opposition party in preparation for the purported national election as it attempts to seize power from the ruling African National Congress.
Lots of Democratic Alliance faithfuls were at the Union Buildings, the official seat of South Africa’s government in Pretoria, expressing hope that the party would bring better welfare services to tackle the challenges which includes a poor electricity that resulted in power blackouts for houses and businesses daily.
The Participants also noted unemployment rate of over 32%, the party promised to create at least 2 million new jobs if it wins the elections.
Despite no date for the National Assembly and provincial elections, observers are of the faith that it would be between May and August.
Supporters of Democratic Alliance occupy the capital before listening to a touching speech by party leader John Steenhuisen, who vowed to out rival the African National Congress and accusing President Cyril Ramaphosa of giving room to corruption by ANC members and leaders.
The upcoming elections is expected to be toughest one for the ruling party, as recent statistics imply the ANC may receive less than 50% of the national vote for the first time since the country’s white minority rule ended in 1994.
At the 2019 elections, the Democratic Alliance received over 20% of the national vote to stay the second-biggest party in the country after the ANC. The party is looking at the possibility of establishing a governing coalition with several other parties to remove the ANC from power, provided they get more than 50% of the total votes.
